Disney Plus announces crime K-drama ‘The Worst of Evil’ starring Ji Chang-wook, Lim Se-mi and Wi Ha-joon

  • Disney Plus has announced a 2023 premiere for its original upcoming Korean crime drama series, “The Worst of Evil.”
  • The series takes place in 1980s South Korea and will follow the story of undercover cops infiltrating a drug trafficking crime ring involving Korea, China and Japan.
  • Ji Chang-wook will play the main protagonist officer Kang Joon-mo, and is joined by Lim Se-mi as narcotics officer Yoo Eui-jung and Wi Ha-joon, whose character is the head of the criminal empire.
  • No exact release date has been announced, but the series adds to Disney Plus’ goal of green lighting over 50 Asian-Pacific original series by 2023.

Disney Plus’ upcoming original K-drama series “The Worst of Evil” has been announced for a 2023 premiere.

Disney Plus made the announcement on Tuesday. The series is a crime-drama set in 1980s South Korea that focuses on undercover police investigators infiltrating a criminal empire inciting a drug war among Korea, China and Japan.

  • “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Ke Huy Quan was announced as one of the new cast members joining “Loki” Season 2 during the D23 Expo on Saturday.
  • The new season of the Disney Plus series, which stars Tom Hiddleston as the lead character, has started production and is slated to premiere in mid-2023.
  • The 51-year-old Vietnamese American actor, who will play a TVA (Time Variance Authority) employee on the show, appeared on stage at the event with co-stars Hiddleston, Owen Wilson and Sophia Di Martino.
  • Quan shared on Instagram that he also reunited with his “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” co-star Harrison Ford, who was at the event to promote “Indiana Jones 5.”

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Ke Huy Quan is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). 

The 51-year-old Vietnamese American actor was announced as part of the “Loki” cast for the Disney Plus show’s second season during the D23 Expo event on Saturday.

  • Disney released the first-look trailer for “American Born Chinese,” a TV adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, at the D23 Expo on Saturday.
  • The trailer features action-packed scenes from the show and offers glimpses of several familiar faces from Chinese mythology, including the Monkey King Sun Wukong and Guanyin, a Bodhisattva associated with compassion, played by Michelle Yeoh.
  • “It’s a lot of fun. It’s a lot of magic. There’s a lot of badass action,” the “Everything Everywhere All At Once” star says in the featurette. “It is a magical ride and that is what Disney Plus is about, isn’t it?”
  • Disney has yet to announce the release date for “American Born Chinese.”

The first-look trailer for “American Born Chinese” was released at the D23 Expo on Saturday  and features  brief glimpses of action-packed scenes, mythology and Michelle Yeoh as the Chinese deity of compassion.

Premiering yesterday on Disney’s streaming platform, the series was flooded with negative reviews on IMDb, resulting in an overall rating of 6.5 out of 10 as of this writing, the lowest rating of any MCU show. Over 23 percent of the show’s reviews gave a rating of 1, while 41 percent gave it a 10. Critics suggest this sort of polarized distribution points to review-bombing from hostile viewers.

  • Renowned designers Prabal Gurung and Phillip Lim will collaborate for the first time in Disney Plus’ upcoming series “American Born Chinese.”

The collaboration, which was first reported by Deadline, will see the pair work on culturally significant costumes for characters from Chinese mythology and classic literature.

Disney Plus has announced that Korean melodrama “Snowdrop,” which was previously only available to stream in Asia and Australia, will premiere on its U.S. platform on Feb. 9. 

Set in 1987, the 16-episode K-drama explores the dangerous love between a North Korean spy (played by “Tune in for Love” star Jung Hae-In) and a college student (played by Blackpink’s Jisoo) amid South Korea’s democracy movement. As the two fall into a romantic relationship, they must overcome obstacles that threaten to put everyone’s safety at risk. 

Group of over 30 Korean studies professors, scholars pen open letter to Disney Plus over ‘Snowdrop’

  • A group of professors and scholars of Korean Studies wrote an open letter to Disney Plus to raise concerns over some of the historical inaccuracies in the Korean drama “Snowdrop.”
  • They argued in the letter that attention must be paid to the potential inaccuracies of Korean shows that are available to stream overseas, especially to audiences who are not familiar with Korea's history.

A group of professors and scholars of Korean Studies has recently penned an open letter to Disney Plus to raise concerns over historical distortion in the Korean drama “Snowdrop,” which is now streaming internationally.

The letter, addressed to President of The Walt Disney Company in Asia Pacific Luke Kang, requested for the company to find experts to “carefully examine the historical references made in the show,” Pinkvilla reported.
