Disney Plus has canceled “American Born Chinese” after only one season despite it receiving stellar reviews from audiences and critics.
Moving the news: A source familiar with the matter told Variety that Disney canceled “American Born Chinese” after the book-to-screen adaptation failed to receive the viewership needed to justify a second season. The recent development also came a day after the options on the cast expired, according to Deadline.
The series’ producers are reportedly looking to shop around the title to other platforms.
About the show: Created by Kelvin Yu based on Gene Luen Yang’s novel of the same name, “American Born Chinese” follows Jin Wang (played by Ben Wang), a high school student whose life is turned upside down after he becomes entangled in an epic battle between the gods of Chinese mythology.
The show, which features Michelle Yeoh, Daniel Wu and Ke Huy Quan as its leads, with James Hong, Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang and Stephanie Hsu appearing as guest stars, has received a 94% critics score and 82% audience score on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
How people reacted: Many fans of the show were disappointed by the news, with one X user writing, “I’m sad. I felt like it found its rhythm at the end of the season.”
Another X user noted that “American Born Chinese” started off slow but later “developed into a pretty cool story.” They added, “I loved the graphic novel as a kid. It’s a shame that Disney failed to properly promote this.”
One fan on X hoped that wherever “American Born Chinese” ends up on should gave it the “marketing and respect it deserves.”
