Asian man fatally struck by unlicensed driver who ran stop sign in Chicago

  • Fengan Yan, 55, was struck to death by an SUV that ran a four-way stop sign in Chicago’s Near South Side on Saturday afternoon.
  • Yan, who was riding a bicycle, was traveling in the same direction as the SUV, according to reports.
  • A 60-year-old woman who was identified as the SUV’s driver was cited for failing to obey the stop sign and for driving on an expired license with no insurance.
  • Yan is reportedly the seventh bicyclist to die on Chicago’s surface streets this year.
  • Advocates are pushing for improved road infrastructure in the city.

An Asian man riding a bicycle was killed after being hit by an SUV that ran a four-way stop sign in Chicago’s Near South Side on Saturday.

Fengan Yan, 55, was pedaling west in the 400 block of West 26th Street in the neighborhood of Armour Square at around 3:35 p.m. when the SUV traveling in the same direction struck him from behind, according to reports.

South Korean actor Yoo Joo-eun leaves heartbreaking note before her death at age 27

  • South Korean actor Yoo Joo-eun died at the age of 27 on Monday.
  • The “Joseon Survival Period” star’s older brother broke the news of her death on her Instagram account, which has since been set to private.
  • While local reports have mentioned suicide, authorities have yet to confirm the cause of her death.
  • Yoo, who made her acting debut in the 2018 drama series “Big Forest,” reportedly wrote a note to her loved ones before she died, saying, "I really wanted to act. It was my everything and my purpose. But it wasn’t easy living that life. I didn’t want to do anything else. That felt hopeless. I realized that doing something that you want is a blessing but only doing that one thing was also a curse."

South Korean actor Yoo Joo-eun died on Monday at the age of 27.

Yoo’s older brother broke the news of her death on her Instagram account, which has since been set to private, on Tuesday.

Filipino veteran, 60, dies after being assaulted, robbed while bringing in groceries to his Baltimore home

  • Victor Malabayabas, a 60-year-old Filipino veteran, died from his injuries following an unarmed robbery in Baltimore, Maryland, on Aug. 20.
  • Malabayabas moved to the U.S. from the Philippines in 1996, and he served in the U.S. Navy for more than a decade. He is also remembered as a well-known volunteer and fixture in local Catholic church activities in southeast Baltimore.
  • A GoFundMe page with a goal of raising $50,000 has been set up on behalf of Malabayabas’ family.
  • The investigation on the incident is ongoing. Police are still searching for the suspect.

A Filipino veteran died from his injuries resulting from an unarmed robbery in Baltimore, Maryland.

Victor Malabayabas, 60, was on the 600 block of S. Kenwood Avenue in Canton when an unidentified man asked him for a tissue at about 5:40 p.m. on Aug. 20, according to the Baltimore Police Department.

Chilling video captures boy drowning to death in packed public pool in China as no one notices

  • A video has emerged online showing an 8-year-old boy drowning inside a packed swimming facility in the Chinese city of Lianyuan on Aug. 14.
  • The clip captured the moment the boy dives into the water, where others are seen swimming nearby and a man in a white shirt is standing on one side of the pool.
  • As the boy struggles to keep his head above water, another child approaches the side of the pool near him but leaves immediately after briefly dipping his feet into the water.
  • The boy eventually stops moving and starts sinking deep into the pool.
  • Two men rush to retrieve the body from the water and try to resuscitate him but to no avail. A woman, whose relationship with the boy is unknown, is seen crying beside the boy’s lifeless body.
  • Following the boy’s death, officials said the swimming pool was shut down as authorities began conducting an investigation into the incident.

Monk fight leads to death in Thailand

  • A fight between two monks at the Wat Mai Thong Chai Temple in Thailand led to the death of 64-year-old monk Kumart Absuwan on Tuesday afternoon.
  • Anake Kwanyuen, a 49-year-old monk of the same temple, reportedly grabbed a tiffin carrier and smashed it on Kumart’s head.
  • Anake surrendered himself to the police and admitted to attacking Kumart out of anger, but said he had no intention of killing him.
  • He was charged with attacking an individual, causing death. He faces a penalty of up to two years of imprisonment and/or a fine of up to 4,000 baht (approximately $113).

A fight between two monks in Thailand resulted in one of them dying. 

Khlong Larn Police Station officers responded to Wat Mai Thong Chai Temple in the central province of Kamphaeng Phet, where they discovered Kumart Absuwan, 64, unconscious on the floor with a bloody and bruised face on Tuesday afternoon.

  • The Mongolian man in his 20s was hired by an outsourced company to construct the stage for Psy’s “Summer Swag 2022” concert.
  • The man was taking down a lighting tower on Sunday at Gangneung Stadium in South Korea when he fell 15 meters (approximately 50 feet). He was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead..
  • P Nation’s “Summer Swag 2022” is scheduled to conclude later this month, but it may be under investigation by South Korea’s Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters for the spread of COVID-19.
  • Psy released his album “Psy 9th” last April, featuring a star-studded list of collaborators such as BTS’ Suga, Mamamoo’s Hwasa, Heize and Jessi, who left the agency last month.

South Korean entertainment label P Nation issued a statement yesterday following the death of a Mongolian construction worker dismantling the stage at Psy’s “Summer Swag 2022” concert. 

The worker was in his 20s and was employed under an outsourced agency tasked with the construction of the concert stage. He fell 15 meters (approximately 50 feet) on Sunday trying to take down a lighting tower at the Gangneung Stadium in Gangwon-do, South Korea, where Psy’s concert had taken place the day prior. The worker was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Man falls to his death while trying to retrieve AirPods outside his window in Hong Kong

  • A 26-year-old man, only identified as Fan, was declared dead on Tuesday after reportedly falling from his apartment building in Sai Wan, Hong Kong, while trying to retrieve his AirPods.
  • Fan had dropped his wireless earbuds onto a metallic canopy outside his window, according to reports.
  • Several eyewitnesses reportedly tried to stop him, thinking he was attempting suicide, but he reassured them that he was not trying to kill himself.
  • Fan slipped and fell from either the fourth or fifth floor of his building onto the East Side street pavement.
  • Paramedics arrived at the scene at 12:18 a.m. and found him in a coma with severe head injuries before taking him to Queen Mary Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to reports.

A man in Hong Kong met his untimely demise on Tuesday after reportedly falling from his apartment building while trying to retrieve his AirPods.

The 26-year-old man, only identified as Fan, was playing video games in the apartment he shared with his brother in Sai Wan, Hong Kong, just before the fatal accident happened, according to reports.

Thai man cremates his wife’s body after keeping it in his home for 21 years

  • Chan Chanwatcharakarn, a 72-year-old retired military officer, had his wife’s body cremated on Saturday after having kept it in a coffin in his home since her death 21 years ago.
  • While he had intended to stay with his wife’s body until his death, he realized she might not receive a proper cremation and funeral if he were to pass away. 
  • Chan contacted the Petchkasem Krungthep Foundation, who helped him organize his wife’s funeral.   
  • The ashes of his wife were placed in an urn, which he intends to keep until he passes away.
  • “I still miss you every minute and my love for you has not changed,” Chan reportedly said.

A California man set to graduate and join the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in February has died after being shot while driving down an Oakland freeway on Tuesday afternoon.

David V. Nguyen, 28, was driving on Interstate 580 near the Bay Bridge toll plaza at around 4:30 p.m. when an unidentified assailant fired a gun into his black Toyota Prius.

‘Snowdrop’ actress Kim Mi-soo dies at 29

  • Korean drama “Snowdrop” actress Kim Mi-soo died this week at 29 years old.
  • Her funeral will be held at a private service in the Nowon District of Seoul.

Kim Mi-soo, Korean actress of the television series “Snowdrop,” unexpectedly passed away at the age of 29 on Wednesday.

“Kim Mi Soo suddenly passed away on January 5,” Kim’s agency, Landscape Entertainment,  said in a statement translated by Soompi. “The bereaved family is currently very heartbroken by the sudden mournful news.”
