A Vietnamese American man is fighting for his life nearly a month after a vicious assault outside a pub in Toledo, Ohio, left him with a severe traumatic brain injury.

California native Phong Tran, 43, was punched and found unconscious outside Ye Olde Cock N Bull on N. Huron St. at around 2 a.m. on Sept. 1. Police on Tuesday released body cam footage that shows witnesses who came to his aid.

Ohio Democratic rep. blames white supremacy for Dallas Korean hair salon shooting

  • Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty (D, OH-3) spoke at the Capitol on Thursday, stating that “three people in a Korean-owned hair salon” were gunned by another “white supremacy replacement theorist,” when the suspect is Black.
  • Beatty, who is also chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), mistakenly blamed white supremacy for the shooting at the Dallas Korean hair salon that left three women of Korean descent wounded.
  • What Beatty did get right, however, was that the shooting was most likely a hate crime, based on police reports.
  • Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia announced on Tuesday the arrest of 36-year-old Jeremy Theron Smith, who is believed to have mental health issues.
  • According to Garcia, the gunman suffered from “panic attacks and delusions when he was around anyone of Asian descent.”

Rep. Tim Ryan defends anti-China campaign ad amid Sinophobia accusations

  • Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), who is running for Ohio's open U.S. Senate seat, defended “It’s us vs China,” his anti-China campaign video which blames the East Asian country for the surge in job losses and price increases in the U.S.
  • “Ohio workers are the best in the world, and I will never apologize for doing everything in my power to take on China and fight for all Ohioans,” Ryan said.
  • Last month, the senatorial candidate received backlash for his video from several AAPI leaders, including Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY), who accused the Democratic candidate of being “Sinophobic.”
  • Ryan is up against attorney Morgan Harper and community activist Traci Johnson for the competitive Democratic primary on May 3. The general election will occur on Nov. 8.

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) has spoken out in defense of his controversial anti-China campaign video, insisting that its content is directed not at Chinese citizens, but at their government.

In an emailed statement, Ryan, who is running for Ohio’s open U.S. Senate seat, said he has spent his career “sounding the alarm on China,” which he described as the “greatest economic adversary” of the United States for 40 years. He also accused the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of “currency manipulation, intellectual property theft and artificially depressed wages,” among other claims.

Asian restaurant owners targeted in wave of home break-ins in Cincinnati Tri-State area

  • Authorities are investigating a string of home burglaries in the Cincinnati Tri-State area in which Asian restaurant owners have been targeted since early 2021.
  • The affected homes are reportedly located in Montgomery, Blue Ash, West Chester, Milford and Indian Hill in Greater Cincinnati, as well as Villa Hills in Kentucky.
  • Suspects allegedly took cash, credit cards, guns, computers, jewelry and designer items such as watches, handbags and clothing.
  • Police believe the victims — primarily Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian homeowners — are being targeted based on their ethnicity due to language barriers and cultural differences.

Multiple police departments in the Cincinnati Tri-State area are reportedly investigating a surge in home burglary cases targeting Asian restaurant owners.

Affected areas include Montgomery, Blue Ash, West Chester, Milford and Indian Hill in Greater Cincinnati, as well as Villa Hills in Kentucky, as per WLWT.

What happened: Darrin Johnson, 24, was accused of punching a male victim in the 200 block of Calhoun Street on Tuesday. It is unclear what led to the assault, but court records say Johnson wanted to harm the victim because of his race.
