K-drama ‘Big Mouth’ in hot water for alleged racist line about Thai culture

  • The K-drama “Big Mouth” has received backlash for a scene where the show’s main character, Park Chang-ho (played by Lee Jong-suk), asks a death row inmate if his mother ate tom yum kung – a hot and sour Thai soup – after giving birth to him.
  • Park taunts the inmate and concludes that he became a psychopath because of the Thai soup.
  • Many Thai netizens were upset by the line and called it racist to Thai culture. 
  • The two platforms airing the K-drama, Disney Plus and MBC, have not issued statements regarding the backlash.

A line about Thai culture in the K-drama “Big Mouth” is stirring up controversy.

The second episode of the drama, which aired on July 30, depicts a scene between the series’ main character, Park Chang-ho (played by Lee Jong-suk), and a fellow inmate on death row. Park asks the inmate if his mother ate seaweed soup after giving birth to him, which is a South Korean custom for new mothers.

  • The woman, who claimed to be a successful forex trader, defrauded over 6,000 people and has allegedly run away to Malaysia.
  • On Aug. 24, 30 people filed a complaint against the YouTuber.
  • The YouTuber, who runs a channel called Nutty’s Diary which has over 800,000 subscribers, last posted around five months ago.

A popular Thai YouTuber who claimed to be a successful forex trader has reportedly left the country after it was discovered that she allegedly defrauded over 6,000 victims out of two billion baht (approximately $55 million). 

Natthamon Khongchak, known as Nutty’s Diary on YouTube with a channel boasting over 800,000 subscribers, allegedly fled abroad to Malaysia. Claiming to be a successful forex trader, Natthamon used her platform to lure victims into investing money with the promise of high returns in short periods of time. 

Woman dubbed ‘Miss Garbage’ wins Miss Universe Thailand 2022

  • Anna Sueangam-iam, a 23-year-old woman known as “Miss Garbage” due to her being the daughter of former garbage collectors, was crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2022 on Saturday night.
  • As this year's Miss Universe Thailand, Sueangam-iam received the new "Power of Resilience" crown by renowned jeweler Mouawad and several prizes including 1 million baht (approximately $27,663), a condominium and a new car.
  • Born in Bangkok, she reportedly played with toys her parents found in the trash while working for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

After police inaction, Thai man begs thieves to stop robbing him as he has nothing left to steal

  • A Thai man who was robbed six times in three months has appealed to the thieves to stop robbing his home as he claims he now has nothing left to steal.
  • The robberies first began in March, and despite numerous complaints to the police, progress has allegedly not been made in tracking down and arresting the suspects.
  • The man uploaded his story to Facebook while listing the dates and items that were stolen from his home, including power cables, electronics and gas tanks.
  • The suspects’ identities have been revealed although no official arrests have been made.

With purportedly nothing left to steal, a fed-up Thai man took to social media to plead with burglars to stop robbing his home after law enforcement allegedly failed to take action despite numerous complaints. 

Niphon Muangkram, 31, lives in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen and has reportedly been robbed six times in three months. Around 40,000 baht (approximately $1,109) worth of valuables has allegedly been taken from his home, even though the 31-year-old lives only 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the police station. 

Thai serial thief who stole hundreds of phones while only wearing white briefs arrested

  • A serial thief known as “Mr. Underpants” has been arrested by Thai police for stealing hundreds of mobile phones from nine Banana stores across Thailand.
  • The thief was caught on CCTV footage robbing the stores wearing only his underwear.
  • Thai police apprehended the man on Tuesday and seized hundreds of phones.
  • According to the thief, some of the phones were sold and the rest were given away to homeless individuals.
  • The man stated that he took off his clothes as it gave him “confidence” and he chose to steal from Banana stores as he loves “bananas” and “the color yellow.”

Thai police have arrested a serial thief known as “Mr. Underpants” on Tuesday after he stole hundreds of mobile phones from nine Banana stores across Thailand wearing only his underwear.  

For more than six months, four arrest warrants were issued against 23-year-old Jeh Issamaeh Hama from Narathiwat province of Thailand. He reportedly stole from Banana branches in Yala, Hat Yai, Patthalung, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Nong Bua Lamphu, Ubon Ratchatani, Hua Hin and Sai Mai in Bangkok. 

OnlyFans couple wanted by Thai police for filming sex videos at popular resort surrender

  • The Thai OnlyFans couple who were wanted for filming pornography at a popular holiday resort in northeastern Thailand surrendered to local police last week, according to Peerapong Thanapochai, the superintendent of Wang Nam Khiao Police Station.
  • The couple previously uploaded three sex clips to their subscription-based OnlyFans account, which were later downloaded by a subscriber.
  • The videos went viral after they were shared among private messaging groups on the social media app Line.
  • The police have charged the couple for producing and distributing pornography and for publishing pornography on a website in exchange for membership fees.
  • The Criminal Division at the Royal Thai Police Office is in the process of investigating the criminal history of the couple before submitting the case to court.

The Thai couple who were wanted for filming pornography at a popular holiday resort in northeastern Thailand have surrendered to local police. 

The unidentified couple confessed to recording sex videos in a resort room in Wang Nam Khieo district without the knowledge of resort management, according to Peerapong Thanapochai, the superintendent of Wang Nam Khiao Police Station.

People Are Changing Their Profile Photos to Drawing of Thai Man Pushed to His Death in SF

In a show of solidarity, social media users have started changing their profile photos to an illustration of Vicha Ratanapakdee, an 84-year-old Thai man who died after being shoved in San Francisco last week.

The attack, which was caught on surveillance video, occurred as Ratanapakdee was walking along Anza Vista and Fortuna Avenues at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 28.
