In “Korean age,” a child is considered to be 1 year old at birth, and becomes a year older every New Year’s Day. Thus, a child born on Dec. 31 of any given year will turn 2 years old the next day.

Japan passed several amendments to its civil code on Wednesday, such as lowering the age of legal adulthood from 20 to 18, raising the age of women’s marriage eligibility from 16 to 18, and allowing gender reassignment procedures without parental consent at 18.
The move to bring down the age of legal adulthood was influenced by the fact that many Japanese citizens join the workforce at 18, just after graduating from high school. This allows them to enter into housing and financial contracts.
