  • Shinee members and fans flooded social media platforms to wish late singer Jonghyun a happy birthday and to celebrate his accomplishments.
  • His birthday remembrance comes after the fourth anniversary of his death on Dec. 18, 2017.
  • The singer died from suicide at the age of 27, most likely due to declining mental health.

Shinee members and fans have taken to social media to remember late singer-songwriter Jonghyun (Kim Jong-hyun) on his birthday.

Born April 8, 1990, Jonghyun performed with members Onew (Lee Jin-ki), Key (Kim Ki-bum), Minho (Choi Min-ho) and Taemin (Lee Tae-min) in the vastly popular second-generation K-pop group Shinee for nine years as their main vocalist. He was well-known for his vocal range which spanned over three octaves, for his talent as a composer, producer and as a successful solo artist.

SM Entertainment, the label that represents former SHINee member Kim Jong-hyun, known simply as Jonghyun, officially released the late artist’s posthumous album “Poet | Artist,” and the title song’s music video “Shinin”.

Jonghyun, the lead singer of the Korean pop group SHINee, died in an apparent suicide last year in December. The 27-year-old singer, who was struggling with depression, reportedly sent a message to his sister before committing suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. It read: “It’s been too hard. Please send me off. Tell everyone I’ve had a hard time. Tell me I did well. This is my last goodbye.”

The sudden passing of SHINee’s main vocalist, Kim Jonghyun, has brought more information about his battle with depression to light and allowed netizens to fully understand the pain and suffering he was struggling with.

While Jonghyun had always been very open with his feelings — lovingly referred to as the “big dam” of SHINee because he was not shy about crying — fans didn’t realize the heavy significance of one of his tattoos and what he was trying to convey regarding his depression.

NBC Thinks All Asians Look the Same, Reports on Jonghyun’s Death with BTS’ RM

Early Tuesday evening, NBC Chicago reported Kim Jonghyun of SHINee’s death on live television. His tragic death has caused the K-pop community to grieve, as well as start a dialogue about mental health in the industry.

However, when NBC aired the broadcast, the report showed clips of BTS, not SHINee, mistaking band leader Kim Namjoon — better known as Rap Monster or RM — for Jonghyun.
