Edgar Cheung Ka-long wins Hong Kong’s 2nd gold medal at the Asian Fencing Championships

  • Fencing star Edgar Cheung Ka-long won Hong Kong’s second gold medal at the Asian Fencing Championships in Seoul on Sunday, beating China’s Mo Ziwei 15-6 in the grand finals of the men's individual foil event.
  • “I fenced quite well and am satisfied with my performance,” Cheung told South China Morning Post. “The hardest one was the semi-final – fortunately, I dealt with it when I was behind.”
  • The semi-final match he was referring to was against China’s Wu Bin. Cheung was in an uphill battle against the Chinese fencer but managed to overtake him with a final score of 15-13.
  • “The Asian title, as well as his top ranking, have certainly boosted Ka-long’s confidence for the worlds,” head coach Zheng Kangzhao told the Post. “I hope he forgets about all his medals – they’re all past tense. Just take one competition at a time and the results will speak for themselves.”

Cheung, 25, beat China’s Mo Ziwei 15-6 in the grand finals of the men’s individual foil event. The win marked Cheung’s second time winning Asian Championship gold after his first in Wuxi, China, in 2016.

  • It is the first time a Hong Kongese fencer has reached the ranking, which was held by Italy’s Alessio Foconi for the past four years.
  • Cheung cemented his status as one of the world’s greatest fencers when he won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in the individual men’s foil in 2021.
  • Along with Cheung, eight other Asian and Asian American fencers made top three in the world in their respective categories.
  • Cheung has garnered widespread attention, appearing as the face of several high-end brands such as Dior and Nike.

Hong Kongese fencer Cheung Ka Long, also known as Edgar, became the country’s first athlete to rank No. 1 in the world in men’s foil.

The International Fencing Federation (IFF) released the rankings on Saturday, moving Cheung, 24, to the No. 1 spot previously held by Italy’s Alessio Foconi for the past four years.
