The trailer for the new drama film “A Great Divide” is out, shining a spotlight on anti-Asian racism in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The movie, which is the feature directorial debut of Jean Shim, stars Ken Jeong and Jae Suh Park as husband-and-wife Isaac and Jenna Lee, with Emerson Min as their son, Benjamin. The story follows the Lee family as they relocate from their Bay Area home to a small rural town in Wyoming in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdown, with Isaac getting a new job and Jenna hoping to get Benjamin into the right college. There, the family must “navigate their outsider status and confrontations with a tight-knit community resistant to change.”
Speaking to Deadline in 2022, Shim, an Emmy-winning commercial and short film director, shared that the movie was a response to the spike in anti-Asian hate in 2020. Seeing the rampant racism, Shim was fed up. “I felt ‘enough is enough.’ I had to do something. Anything. So I decided to tell this story. My hope is that our Asian American film can move people’s hearts and ultimately create empathy,” he said.
Set to premiere on Nov. 26, the film also stars MeeWha Alana Lee, Miya Cech, West Mulholland, Seamus Dever and Marshall Allman.
