Beauty vlogger James Charles has drawn mixed reactions after featuring Japanese and Chinese influencers in a recent video about Korean makeup.
Key details: Charles, 24, uploaded the video “Trying a Full Face of Korean Makeup!” to YouTube on Saturday as part of his new series where he tries full-face makeup looks from different countries.
The content creator’s video reportedly ignited controversy after some YouTube users pointed out that the beauty influencers he featured in the video were Chinese and Japanese, not Korean.
Who they are: The influencers Charles featured in the video are @koocat, a makeup and lifestyle influencer who is of Japanese descent, and @lafu911, a Chinese makeup influencer on Douyin.
Calling him out: YouTube users criticized Charles for using non-Korean influencers in his video, with one user commenting, “He literally used Douyin/chinese makeup in the thumbnail and some of the TikTok references.”
Another user humorously called out the influencer in their comment, writing, “Takes videos with Chinese app watermark still on. James Charles: K O R E A N M A K E U P.”
Positive reactions: Despite the backlash, several YouTube users left positive comments on Charles’ video.
