Cup Noodles will come in paper cups starting next year, phasing out its current polystyrene cups.
What’s new: The updated packaging is made of 40% recycled fiber. It ditches the plastic wrap and has a sleeve made of 100% recycled paper. It is also microwavable, marking a first for the brand. Heating time is set at 2 minutes and 15 seconds.
Why this matters: Nissin Foods USA, Cup Noodles’ parent company, calls the shift a “historic change” since the brand’s U.S. arrival in 1973. The company says the transition aligns with its “Earth Food Challenge 2030,” aiming to minimize carbon dioxide emissions by 30% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
Michael Price, president and CEO of Nissin Foods USA, said in a news release: “Since its invention more than 50 years ago, Cup Noodles has become a cultural mainstay and a staple in households around the world. And while Cup Noodles will continue to have that same satisfying taste and iconic look, we continue to find ways to evolve the brand to support the current needs of our consumers, the environment and the world. This updated packaging and the new paper cup marks an important milestone for Cup Noodles and a key step in our environmental commitment.”
Cup Noodles’ new paper packaging hits stores early 2024.
