BLACKPINK named Time Entertainer of the Year 2022
BLACKPINK has been named Time magazine’s Entertainer of the Year.
The K-pop quartet was revealed as the recipient of the title on Monday, Dec. 5, making them the first girl group to be selected for the publication’s annual accolade.
“BLACKPINK is this generation’s icon that leads the trend, and the largest female band in the world,” the magazine wrote.
The video clip announcement from Time lists some of the group’s achievements, including becoming the first K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella, being the biggest artists on YouTube with 83 million subscribers, their second studio album “Born Pink” debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and their selection as U.N. Sustainable Development Goals advocates.
BLACKPINK told Time: “We’re the happiest when we do music. Good results followed because we’re always happily enjoying every moment. I think the power of our fans who always love and support us constantly is the biggest reason [behind our achievements]. We will do our best in every moment with gratitude in our hearts.”
In 2019, BLACKPINK was selected by the magazine as one of their Time 100 Next artists. In 2020, they were a Time person of the year nominee.
The YG Entertainment idols rounded out the year with a few other highlights. They were named Spotify’s “Most-Streamed Girl Group Globally” for the fourth year in a row. Their song “Pink Venom,” meanwhile, was ranked No. 35 on Rolling Stone’s “The 100 Best Songs of 2022” and earned the group two MAMA Awards, in the Best Music Video and Best Female Group of the Year categories.
BLACKPINK also recently announced a reality series titled “BORN PINK MEMORIES,” or “B.P.M.,” to be released on YouTube.
