Hong Kong Pro-Democracy activist Agnes Chow just earned a new nickname after many supporters started calling her the “real Mulan” following the news of her arrest.
Joshua Wong and Agnes Chow, former student leaders of 2014’s Umbrella Movement, were detained on Friday and charged with offenses such as participation in an unauthorized assembly outside police headquarters on June 21.
A leading figure in the ongoing Hong Kong protests has recently expressed his willingness to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping “directly and openly.”
Joshua Wong took to Twitter to write, “Welcome Emperor Xi come to HK and meet with protesters directly and openly during demonstration”
China has brushed off international criticisms over the high-profile arrest of Joshua Wong and two other young leaders of Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement.
The Chinese government even doubled down on its position by warning against using “so-called democracy” to engage in “illegal violent activities”.
