Leader of Hong Kong protest crackdown favored to be the city’s next chief executive

Former Hong Kong Chief Secretary and security official John Lee announced on Wednesday that he is running for election to become chief executive of the global financial hub. 

Lee, 64, led the crackdown on pro-democracy and anti-government protests in Hong Kong during 2019, which occurred in response to the proposed Fugitive Offenders Ordinance amendment bill that would allow extradition of fugitives to mainland China.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam made a surprise appearance on Conan O’Brien’s self-titled talk show in the form of a cardboard cutout.

In a “Conan Highlight” segment, posted on Tuesday, the 57-year-old veteran talk show host said he asked viewers to send in photographs of themselves to fill up the Los Angeles theater seats as people continue to practice social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Coconuts Hong Kong reported.

Hong Kong’s highly contested extradition bill, which triggered months of protests, could not be withdrawn formally as the Legislative Council session turned chaotic on Wednesday.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam was supposed to deliver her annual address in the city’s parliament, but forced to suspend it after being heckled by the opposition members of the legislative council, BBC reports.
