Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani will be missing the rest of the 2023 regular season due to an oblique injury he suffered during batting practice earlier this month.
Breaking the news: Angels general manager Perry Minasian cleared the air on Saturday after reports claimed that the 29-year-old two-way star‘s locker had been cleared out. He explained that Ohtani has been placed on an injury list.
The Japanese athlete will be spending the remaining days of the season on this list. The final day of the current MLB season is Oct. 1.
About his injuries: Ohtani’s right oblique injury reportedly forced him to miss 11 straight games.
The recent injury came just weeks after Ohtani tore his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) on Aug. 23, effectively ending his pitching run with the Angels for the rest of the season.
There is no malice: Minasian noted that there was “nothing malicious” about Ohtani clearing out his locker at the Angels stadium.
“He thought there was a possibility for a procedure today,” Minasian said. “That’s why he packed. It’s nothing malicious. There’s no story there. It’s just he’s so focused on, ‘The season’s over, I have to get ready for ‘24,’ and that was what his mindset was.”
Ohtani’s plans: Minasian also said that Ohtani is now shifting his focus on addressing his torn UCL. MLB reported that Ohtani is scheduled to undergo surgery “as soon as next week.”
Supporting the team: Even though Ohtani did not play on Saturday, he was reportedly spotted in the dugout with his team. The Angels lost to the Detroit Tigers with a final score of 11-2.
