The New York Mets trolled Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani after he accidentally broke a video panel with a foul ball on Saturday.
What happened: Ohtani, 29, successfully hit Mets pitcher Carlos Carrasco’s pitch during the first inning of the Saturday game between the Mets and the Angels at New York City’s Citi Field.
The ball, which reportedly clocked in at 88 miles per hour, went flying into foul territory and broke the video panel, as can be seen in a video posted by SNY on X, formerly Twitter.
Having some fun: Shortly after the accident, the Mets and their production team decided to have some fun by writing, “We’re sending you the bill for that, Shohei!” and “Please don’t break anything else, Shohei!” on the Citi Field scoreboard.
How people reacted: Many baseball fans also poked fun at the accident on X, with one user writing, “The bulletin board was destroyed, but it must have had a considerable advertising effect.”
What happened next: After the accident, the Angels two-way phenom reportedly pulled off a 109.6-miles-per-hour double into right-center.
Ohtani, who recorded his 100th hit of the season in July, will reportedly focus on batting this season due to the torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow.
