A restored version of Park Chan-wook’s “Oldboy” will return to cinemas to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
American independent film production and distribution company Neon acquired the domestic rights for the hit 2003 film and released a restored official trailer on YouTube on Thursday.
Earlier this month, Neon announced that a “newly restored and remastered” version of the South Korean psychological action thriller is “coming to theaters soon.”

“Oldboy,” which stars Choi Min-sik, follows a man named Oh Dae-su who searches for his captor after being imprisoned in a cell for 15 years.
Oh is unsure of his captor’s identity, as well as his captor’s motives behind locking him up.
“Oldboy” is the second part of Park’s “The Vengeance Trilogy,” a thematically linked film trilogy that also includes “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” (2002) and “Lady Vengeance” (2005).
In addition to “Oldboy,” Park has directed several other hit films, including “Decision to Leave” (2022), which was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The remastered, restored version of “Oldboy” will hit cinemas on Aug. 16. Watch Neon’s 20th anniversary trailer for it below:
