NewJeans have secured their place in international music history by becoming the first Asian girl group to chart three songs simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.
Groundbreaking achievement: The feat puts the South Korean girl group in an exclusive club of female groups that consists of The Shangri-Las, En Vogue and The Pussycat Dolls.
In 1964, The Shangri-Las made the list with “Leader of the Pack,” “Give Him a Great Big Kiss” and “Maybe.” In 1992, En Vogue charted with “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It),” “Giving Him Something He Can Feel” and “Free Your Mind.” In 2006, The Pussycat Dolls made the list with “Beep,” “Don’t Cha” and “Stickwitu.”
Certified fresh: NewJeans made it to the Hot 100 a little over a year after their July 2022 debut with their tracks “Super Shy,” “ETA” and “Cool With You.” They are now the sixth K-pop act overall to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with their second mini-album, “Get Up.”
The new mini-album reportedly soared to the top spot with 126,500 equivalent album units in the U.S. Around 101,500 of these units were traditional album sales, with the majority of them attributed to CD purchases.
Battle with “Barbie”: The competition for the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 was fierce, with NewJeans in a close race against the “Barbie” soundtrack. However, their physical album sales tipped the scales in their favor, leading them to victory by just 500 equivalent album units.
Lollapalooza favorites: On Thursday, NewJeans notably became the first K-pop girl group to perform onstage at Lollapalooza Chicago. Their 45-minute set of 12 songs captivated over 70,000 spectators at Chicago’s Grant Park and hundreds of thousands more through digital platforms.
