Jo Koy is set to host the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards in January, making it the comedian’s first-ever gig as a host of a major awards show.
Moving the news: Koy, whose real name is Joseph Glenn Herbert Sr., 52, will be hosting the annual three-hour event that will air live on CBS on Jan. 7, 2024, starting at 8 p.m. EST, the Golden Globes announced on Thursday. The event will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
The comedian also broke the news in an Instagram Reel post on Thursday, announcing to his fans that the Golden Globes is happening in a couple of weeks. He added, “You are probably wondering who the host is – It’s me!”
What they’re saying: Golden Globes President Helen Hoehne said they are thrilled to have the stand-up comedian host the annual awards show and “bring his infectious energy and relatable humor to kick off Hollywood’s award season.”
Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner, executive producing showrunners at the award show, praised Koy’s “genuine brand of comedy,” which they believe to entertain the “honorees in the room at the Beverly Hilton and viewers at home.”
What he’s saying: Excited to host the Golden Globes in January, Koy said in a statement, “I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal Kita (Google it)!”
“Mahal Kita” is the Filipino for “I love you.”
What’s next: Koy voices the Monkey King in Paramount Plus’s “The Tiger’s Apprentice,” which is set to premiere on Feb. 2, 2024. Joining him in the feature film are Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Sandra Oh, Lucy Liu, Bowen Yang, Leah Lewis, Sherry Cola, Greta Lee, Kheng Hua Tan, Poppy Liu, Diana Lee Inosanto, Deborah S. Craig and Patrick Gallagher.
