AAPI communities are most concerned about inflation, immigration: poll

A new AAPI Data/AP-NORC Poll revealed that economic and foreign policy concerns are the top priorities for Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in 2024.
The results: According to the data, about three in 10 cited inflation (31%) and immigration (29%) as the key issues for the government to address, aligning with the concerns of U.S. adults overall.
Other frequently mentioned issues include the environment (25%), general economic concerns (24%), health care reform (23%), education/student debt (19%), gun issues and crime/violence.
Democrats vs. Republicans: Political differences are evident, with Republicans twice as likely as Democrats to emphasize immigration, while Democrats showed greater concern for climate change (37% vs 9%) and guns (22% vs 11%).
Generational variations within AAPI communities are also notable, with younger adults prioritizing health care reform, student debt, housing costs and the Israel-Hamas conflict, while adults over 60 focused more on immigration.
No faith in the government: Doubts about the government’s ability to address concerns are widespread across AAPI Democrats and Republicans, mirroring the national trend. The majority (69%) express little or no confidence in the government’s efficacy for 2024.
About the poll: The study, which was conducted from Nov. 6 to 15, 2023, included 1,115 AAPI adults in the U.S. and has a margin of sampling error of +/- 4.4 percentage points.
