Tony Hsieh immortalized in Las Vegas mural, bust for his 50th birthday

A mural and bronze bust of the late Tony Hsieh, former CEO of online shoe and clothing retailer Zappos, was unveiled in downtown Las Vegas last week.
Commemorating a legacy: DTP Companies organized a series of celebrations on Dec. 11, known as “Tony Hsieh Day,” to mark what would have been the entrepreneur’s 50th birthday. He passed away at the age of 46 in a house fire in Connecticut on Nov. 18, 2020.
The festivities included the renaming of the Zappos Council Chambers to “Tony Hsieh Theater,” an art car showcase and a musical variety show at Downtown Container Park, among others.
Bust and mural unveiled: The day’s main activity saw the unveiling of the bronze bust and a mural featuring Hsieh’s favorite things at the Tony Hsieh Education Center inside the Strong Start Academy Elementary School. The unveiling ceremony was attended by Las Vegas Mayor Carol Goodman, Hsieh’s family, friends and students from Strong Start Academy.
Hsieh’s impact on downtown Las Vegas: During his tenure as CEO of Zappos, Tony Hsieh became a leading advocate for revitalizing downtown after relocating the company to the Las Vegas Valley. He further contributed to the area’s transformation after founding DTP Companies with a $350 million investment.
Despite his passing, his initiatives through his companies have continued to impact the area.
Remembering Hsieh: In a statement, DTP Companies acknowledged Hsieh not only as an entrepreneur and visionary, but also as a humanitarian, family member, mentor and friend.
“The depth of relationships that he had with so many people was remarkable. His commitments often pulled him in many directions, but he always made time for friendships. As a friend, he was authentic, loving, kind and selfless. While many knew him in various roles, to us he was DTP’s Tony. He was our Tony. He had a vision of building a community centered around collisions and connectedness. He took a chance on a forgotten area that no one else would. He laid the foundation of a neighborhood made up of small businesses and creatives striving to support one another.”
