British American comedian John Oliver recently educated audiences about Asian Americans, explaining why the racial group is not a monolith and why the model minority label is inherently problematic.
The discussion, which also tackled significant points in Asian American history, made for Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver’s half-hour series on HBO.
On Sunday night’s “Last Week Tonight”, John Oliver visited Dharamsala, India, for a side-splitting and enlightening interview with the Dalai Lama, the original “woke bae” as Oliver calls him.
They discussed, among other things, the turmoil in Tibet, the Dalai Lama’s future reincarnation, and self-immolations, an act done by more than 140 Tibetans since 2009, which the 81-year-old spiritual leader described as a “difficult situation.”
“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” host John Oliver has made television history by purchasing and forgiving nearly $15 million in medical debt owed by almost 9,000 people.
