‘Barbie’ star Simu Liu shares behind-the-scenes dance rehearsal video
Simu Liu recently shared a behind-the-scenes video taken during a dance rehearsal for his highly anticipated film “Barbie.”
About the video: On Thursday, Liu, 33, posted the short clip on Instagram.
“Whether you’re doing a brutal fight scene on a bus in SF or dancing the night away in Barbieland, choreography is choreography,” he wrote in his post’s caption. “And long before I ever used the Ten Rings, your boy was competing in hip-hop competitions with his college dance crew. Appreciate @BarbieTheMovie for bringing me back to my roots. This one’s for you, Hip Hop Western.”
In the video, Liu can be seen learning dance moves from choreographer Lisa Welham.
The “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star also commented on his own post, writing, “Not Margot and Greta casually conversing in the background.”
About “Barbie”: The Greta Gerwig-directed film, which stars Liu as one of several Kens, boasts a superstar cast that includes Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emma Mackey, Ritu Arya, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell and Michael Cera, among many others.
Liu previously praised Gerwig’s film, telling Vanity Fair in December 2022 that he considers it diverse and inclusive.
“I remember very clearly about some of our big intricate dance sequences. Greta was very, very conscientious about who she cast. We were able to cast people of different shapes, sizes, differently abled, to all participate in this dance — all under this message of: You don’t have to be blonde, white, or X, Y, Z in order to embody what it means to be a Barbie or a Ken.”
“Barbie” hits cinemas on July 21.
