Sandra Oh lends her voice to Canadian Audible series ‘Anne of Green Gables’

For her latest venture, actor Sandra Oh lent her voice in narrating the Canadian Audible Originals series “Anne of Green Gables,” a 1908 classic novel by author Lucy Maud Montgomery.
About the series: In an interview with CBC Arts, Oh expressed her love for voice work and her excitement about the project, particularly working with Canadian American actor Megan Follows, who directed the audio drama featuring actors Catherine O’Hara, Victor Garber and Michela Luci.
“Anne of Green Gables” follows an 11-year-old orphan girl Anne Shirley who finds a home with middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. The story describes Anne’s experiences as she navigates life with the Cuthberts, in school and within the town. The immersive audio is part of Audible’s growing collection of Canadian originals.
Shift in the film industry: Oh reflected on the strength of the character Anne and Montgomery’s writing, emphasizing the relevance of the story, which highlights Anne’s inner life, imagination and her journey from a girl to a young woman, emphasizing her desire for acceptance and showcasing her intellect and ambition.
Proud to be part of a more inclusive Canadian storytelling landscape, Oh acknowledged the ongoing shift in the film industry toward diverse perspectives, citing her collaborations with filmmakers who have contributed to this change over the past 30 years. She recognizes the progress made while acknowledging the need for continued growth and representation.
“There’s a long way to go,” Oh told CBC. “But it is happening. I exist. So it is happening. I’ve always been so proud to be Canadian because it’s always been a part of how we are trying to see ourselves and not that it is perfect at all — because it is not. The integration of what full Canadian stories look like, not just from Lucy Maud Montgomery, which is necessary as it is a part, but not just the full white historical perspective. That’s what needs to be grown. I have felt a part of that interest, desire and perspective.”
Oh’s desired role: When asked about her desire for the next phase of her career, the 52-year-old actor said she wishes to explore diverse and meaningful roles, specifically emphasizing the importance of playing full characters from the perspective of an East Asian woman.
“What I hope in the back half of my career is I get to play the characters that I’ve always wanted to play,” Oh said. “It’s not so much what the character does… but like full characters, the story of what it is to be a woman, a middle aged woman, a middle aged woman who is East Asian.”
