Malaysian Chinese comedian and actor Ronny Chieng shared a throwback photo with his wife in New York City, reflecting on his journey to headlining a show in the iconic city.
Throwback photo: In the Instagram post uploaded last week, the 38-year-old comedian recalled the first time he visited the Big Apple in 2009 with his girlfriend, who he met while attending law school in Australia. At the time, Chieng says that he was only six months into his career as a comedian.
“This was a big trip for us,” he writes in the caption. “We took this photo in Times Square and got scammed into going to Dangerfield’s because Charlie Murphy was going to be there. He wasn’t. Joke’s on the scammers though because I wanted to go to Dangerfield’s anyway.”
Fast forward to 2023: In the next photo, he shares a recent photo with his then-girlfriend and now-wife, standing in front of his own billboard, promoting a sold-out show at Radio City Music Hall in 2023. Chieng, who was dressed in a suit and tie for the updated picture, expressed his gratitude to New York City for becoming their new home.
“In Times Square with my now wife (same woman) in front of my own billboard trying to scam people to come for my sold out show at @radiocitymusichall. Thank you NEW YORK CITY for becoming our home,” he says.
Reactions: Many celebrities and his colleagues and Instagram followers expressed admiration for Chieng, noting his inspiring “glow-up” and saying that he has “made it.”
“Briefly popped back onto social media, and so worth it, as this was the first post to pop up. YOU MADE IT!” film director and screenwriter Alice Wu commented.
About Chieng: Chieng is a senior correspondent on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” and he created and starred in the ABC sitcom “Ronny Chieng: International Student.” The actor has also starred in films such as “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Joy Ride,” “M3gan” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and TV series “American Born Chinese.”
Chieng previously announced his 2024 “The Love to Hate It Tour,” which is set to begin on Jan. 12 in Indianapolis. He will be making stops in major cities, such as New York City, San Francisco, Las Vegas and others, before concluding in Portland on June 23.
