The Japanese voice actor of Ash Ketchum from the long-running “Pokémon” anime recently went viral for her live performance of the series’ original theme song.
Ash’s final appearance in the “Pokemon” anime is set to air in Japan on Friday. Rica Matsumoto, 54, helped commemorate the end of an era by performing “Mezase Pokémon Master – with my friends -” for the YouTube channel The First Take on Friday.
Matsumoto has notably been the voice behind Ash, known as Satoshi in the Japanese version of the “Pokémon” anime, for around 25 years. Her remix of the show’s’ iconic theme song, which she recorded in a single take, quickly went viral and now has over 6 million views and 417,000 likes on YouTube since its release on Friday.
On Dec. 16, 2022, around a month after Ash finally became the greatest Pokémon trainer in the world, the Pokémon Company released a teaser trailer for a new “Pokémon” series that will feature brand new protagonists.
More info on the new series was shared earlier this month on social media.

The final 11 episodes of “Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series” follow Ash and Pikachu’s concluding chapter as the franchise’s main characters.
Ash will be replaced by the characters Roy and Liko, with some social media users speculating that Liko is Ash’s daughter, for her green hair clip in the teaser trailer looks similar to the logo on Ash’s original cap.
