Janet Yeoh, the mother of award-winning Malaysian actor Michelle Yeoh, was overjoyed after her daughter won her first Oscar.
Emotions ran high earlier this week at the Oscars Viewing Party held at the Dadi Cinema in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In a TikTok video posted by Hype Malaysia on Monday, Michelle Yeoh’s 84-year-old mother can be seen surrounded by several people as they brace themselves in anticipation before the Best Actress winner at the 95th Academy Awards is announced. After presenters Halle Berry and Jessica Chastain announce Michelle Yeoh as the winner, the 60-year-old actor’s mother joyously throws her hands in the air as people around her jump and hug each other to celebrate the historic moment. Speaking at a press conference after the viewing party, Janet Yeoh could not contain how proud she was of her daughter, whom she calls her “little princess.” “I so love my daughter and she has made Malaysia proud,” she said. “Malaysia Boleh [Malaysia Can]!”

“I’m very excited. I’m proud of my daughter. I love my daughter. My daughter is a hardworking girl,” she also told reporters.
Michelle Yeoh bested other nominees for the highly coveted award, including Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) and Michelle Williams (“The Fablemans”).
Commenting on the tight competition, Vicky Yeoh, the Malaysian actor’s niece, said her aunt’s recent win was “such a jaw-dropping moment.”
“I was speechless, I cried,” she added. “The nominees are really strong, but we had no doubt. We keep telling her that you will win … you will stand on the stage with the golden man.”
Several other family members and friends attended the Oscars Viewing Party, including Malaysian politicians Nancy Shukri and Hannah Yeoh.
“Most inspiring quote for all of us aunties — ‘Ladies, don’t let anybody ever tell you that you are past your prime’ — Michelle Yeoh,’” Hannah Yeoh said, quoting Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar acceptance speech. On Monday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Michelle Yeoh for the historic achievement on Twitter.
In creating history by being not just the first Malaysian but the very first Asian actress to win in this category, we take enormous pride in her achievement, adding to a long list of successes and capping a critically acclaimed acting career spanning decades. Coupled with this latest accomplishment, Michelle’s illustrious and exemplary career in this field will certainly continue to be a source of great inspiration and motivation to our homegrown actors and actresses and provide even greater impetus to the growth of our local industry. Way to go, Michelle!
