Mark Zuckerberg has shared videos of himself learning how to make a katana — a long sword used by Japanese samurais — and wielding it during a stopover in Tokyo.
What he shared: In one video posted on Instagram on Sunday, Zuckerberg, 39, can be seen forging his katana under the guidance of Japanese swordmaster Akihira Kokaji, who holds the scalding steel down while he hammers it.
In another video, the Meta CEO can be seen smoothly slicing a wooden practice pole like a hot knife through butter.
Why he’s in Japan: Zuckerberg, who is currently on an Asian tour, stopped by Japan with his family for a ski trip, a Meta spokesperson told Bloomberg. He also set a two-day meeting with Meta developers in Tokyo to discuss Quest virtual reality headsets and Llama, the company’s large language model (LLM) poised to compete against OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
What’s next: After Japan, the tech mogul will head to Seoul on Wednesday. Meta has requested a meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, whose office is “strongly considering it,” according to Yonhap News. This will reportedly be Zuckerberg’s first visit to South Korea in 10 years.
Local media also reported that Zuckerberg is planning to meet LG and Samsung leaders. The potential LG partnership is reportedly focused on developing extended reality (XR) headsets, with Meta likely integrating its artificial intelligence (AI) technology into them.
After South Korea, Zuckerberg is expected to fly to Jamnagar, Gujarat, in western India to attend a three-day, pre-wedding celebration for Anant Ambani, billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s youngest son. The occasion will begin on March 1.
