The upcoming Los Angeles Pride Parade, scheduled for Sunday, June 11, will honor comedian Margaret Cho and the late actor Leslie Jordan as grand marshals.
“We need this Pride more than ever. I have been attending Pride celebrations since 1978 and this time around the need to celebrate as well as unite is more urgent than it has ever been. Our love is greater than their hate” Cho said in a statement
Other than Cho, Emmy-winner Leslie Jordan, who passed away in October 2022 at the age of 67, will be recognized as the Legacy Grand Marshal.
This new title has been introduced to honor individuals who left enduring legacies and made significant contributions to their communities.
Jordan’s sister, Jana “Cricket” Jordan, issued a statement on behalf of her late brother, emphasizing the positive influence he had on the LGBTQ+ community. She wrote, “His honor further solidifies the positive impact he made in the world, but more importantly for the LGBTQ+ community. His spirit continues to bring love and light.”
To commemorate Leslie Jordan, his family will participate in the parade on a specially crafted vehicle dedicated to his memory.
In addition to Cho and Jordan, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Southern California will receive the Community Grand Marshal award.
This recognition coincides with the organization’s 100th anniversary of advocating for LGBTQ+ civil rights. In 1970, the ACLU played a crucial role in assisting the Christopher Street West Association, the nonprofit behind the Pride Parade, in obtaining a parade permit. Their joint efforts resulted in the successful organization of the first-ever L.A. Pride Parade on June 28 of that year.
The parade will commence at Sunset Blvd and Highland Avenue, featuring a special drag performance presented by the ACLU SoCal and starring Morgan McMichaels. Accompanying the performance will be music by 14-time Oscar nominee Diane Warren.
