TikToker’s video of live worm inside salmon pack in Costco goes viral

A TikTok user has gone viral for sharing a video of a live worm she found inside a pack of salmon while shopping at a Costco.
Key details: In a now-viral video uploaded to TikTok last week, user @msrachellyn shows a packed Costco salmon that has a live worm inside it.
“Bruh not the live worms in the salmon at Costco …immediately put it back,” the TikTok user wrote in her video’s onscreen text.
As of this writing, her post has garnered over 2 million views.
Social media reacts: Some TikTok users in the post’s comment section mentioned that worms are common in fishes, while others were more concerned by the price of the salmon in the video, with one user writing, “Which is worse, the worm or the price?”
“Concerning worm, but so is the $32 for salmon,” another user commented, while another said, “Additional protein…included in the price.”
About the parasite: Citing data from the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, Canada’s CBC reported in 2019 that 75% of wild Pacific salmon are infected with anisakid nematodes, also known as herring worms or cod worms, a common type of parasite found in fish.
The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control notably stated in a resource note that “thorough cooking and/or freezing will kill these parasites.”
However, if the parasites are ingested in their live state, they can attach themselves to a person’s stomach, resulting in anisakiasis or diphyllobothriasis, the latter of which is a long-lasting infection.
