A video of lion dance performers grooving to non-traditional tracks has gone viral.
TikTok user @miegemezzzzz posted the minute-and-a-half-long clip on Monday. In it, three groups of lion dance performers move to popular modern songs instead of the typical sounds of cymbals, gongs and drums.
The performers captured the audience members’ attention with the first song, “See Tình” by Vietnamese singer Hoàng Thùy Linh. They can then be seen shuffling to LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” before dancing to BLACKPINK’s “Pink Venom.” At the end of their performance, they move their feet to a song from Netflix’s hit series “Squid Game.”
The now-viral video, which was reportedly filmed at Emporium Pluit Mall in Jakarta, has already garnered over 5.8 million views and 626,000 likes.
Several TikTok users were quick to comment on the clip, with many of them praising the unique spin on the lion dance.
“So cute,” one user wrote, while another said, “Made my day!”
“It is not a traditional way but man this can get a lot of new gen attention,” another user wrote.
“I feel like this is a pretty cool way to get the younger generation interested in this part of our culture, n then When they’re interested, they’d be willing to see the traditional dance too. This just makes it a little bit more relatable to them is all,” another user said.
