The stars of “The Joy Luck Club” have recreated an iconic photo from the groundbreaking 1993 film during a recent holiday reunion.
30-year throwback: A heartwarming Instagram post shared by Ming-Na Wen on Dec. 19 showed her with co-stars Rosalind Chao, Lauren Tom and Tamlyn Tomita striking the same pose they shared over three decades ago.
“Kicking off the holidays with my #JoyLuckClub sisters!” Wen wrote in the caption. “Thanks for hosting the fab dinner and getting us all to do this, Lauren & Curt!”
Tomita took to the comment section to relive the evening: “The food was fabulous, the friendships everlasting, the fun infectious, and the festiveness was joyous and shining.”
Chao also chimed in, “Grateful to you gals for hanging with me despite all my protestations and text mutings! Love celebrating with you.”
Honorary Auntie: Amy Tan, author of the bestselling novel that the film was based on, declared in the comment section that she is the “honorary Auntie of the honorary Auntie of these amazing women.” Tan co-wrote the screenplay with Oscar-winning screenwriter Ronald Bass.
Sisterhood and legacy: The original film, released to critical acclaim in 1993, centered around the stories of Chinese American women and their immigrant mothers.
Being the first major studio movie with a primarily female Asian American cast, “The Joy Luck Club” is widely recognized as helping to pave the way for Asian representation in Hollywood.
Sequel buzz: The reunion sparked excitement for the long-anticipated sequel to “The Joy Luck Club,” which is officially in development. The original cast, reprising their roles as mothers and grandmothers, will join a new generation exploring relationships with culture, heritage, love, womanhood and identity.
Tan and Bass are returning to pen the script of the sequel, which promises to delve into the complexities of mother-daughter relations across three generations.
