Crowdfunding campaign for Oakland toddler killed by stray bullet raises over $100,000 in 14 hours

The GoFundMe campaign for Jasper Wu, the 23-month-old boy killed by a stray bullet while his family was driving on an Oakland highway on Nov. 6, has raised more than $100,000 in 14 hours.

Campaign for Jasper and his family: The campaign, set up with the help of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, is now one of the top fundraisers on GoFundMe, a spokesperson for the American for-profit crowdfunding platform informed NextShark on Wednesday.

    • Since its publication, the GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $200,000 from over 4,000 donors at the time of writing. All of the net proceeds will go to the Wu family. The spokesperson also told NextShark the campaign was shared more than 3,000 times on Wednesday.
    • “The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce is disheartened to learn that another life has succumbed due to violence, especially one so young,” the organization wrote.
    • The post said Carl Chan, president of Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, had met with the boy’s family and learned that his father, Jihao Wu, had yet to meet his son in person. He reportedly flew to China and could not return to the U.S. due to the COVID-19 restrictions. However, Jihao Wu was allowed to re-enter the U.S. on Monday to prepare for the funeral.

What happened: Jasper Wu and his family were driving through Interstate 880 on Nov. 6 when a stray bullet pierced through their white Lexus Sedan and hit him in the head. The family’s car was caught in the crossfire between two cars at around 2 p.m. that day, NBC Bay Area reported.

    • The toddler was brought to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Two adults and two other child passengers of the car were unharmed during the incident. Jasper would have turned 2 in December.
    • The family spoke to ABC7 off-camera and said they want those responsible for the shooting to surrender.
