Studio Ghibli VP: ‘The Boy and the Heron’ may not be Miyazaki’s last film

Renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, the creative genius behind Studio Ghibli’s most iconic films, may not be hanging up his director’s hat just yet, despite earlier indications that “The Boy and the Heron” would be his final masterpiece.
Déjà vu: Miyazaki‘s history of retirement is a complex one. He initially stepped away in the late 1990s, but then returned to direct the 2002 Oscar-winning “Spirited Away.”
While “The Wind Rises” in 2013 was believed to be his swan song, “The Boy and the Heron” took on that mantle more recently. Yet, if current hints are any indication, Miyazaki might just be defying expectations once again.
How we know: Studio Ghibli‘s VP, Junichi Nishioka, let it slip during the Toronto International Film Festival, which Miyazaki’s new movie opened. While discussing “The Boy and the Heron,” he mentioned Miyazaki’s frequent visits to the office armed with fresh ideas.
“Other people say that this might be his last film, but he doesn’t feel that way at all,” said Nishioka through a translator, according to CBC.
“He is currently working on ideas for a new film. He comes into his office every day and does that. This time, he’s not going to announce his retirement at all. He’s continuing working just as he has always done.”
About the film: “The Boy and the Heron” revolves around a young boy’s enchanting encounter in an old building, where he discovers a magical heron.
