Wu and Kattner, the 42-year-old frontman of experimental rock band Man Man, welcomed their first child in August 2020 following a low-profile pregnancy.
In an interview with talk show host Jimmy Fallon in May 2021, the Golden Globe-nominated actor shared that her daughter has a “blue butt,” leaving Fallon mildly confused.
Wu then explained that her daughter has a “Mongolian spot,” a type of skin marking that appears flat and blue to blue-gray. The birthmark, which is now called dermal melanocytosis, typically fades on its own after a few years.
There’s this thing, I had never heard of it before, but it’s called a ‘Mongolian spot,'” Wu told Fallon. “And apparently, it happens in a lot of Asian babies, and my boyfriend and I are both Asian… It’s where your butt is blue for the first two years of your life, and then it just goes away.”
Wu, who recently starred in the Amazon Prime series “The Terminal List,” has been keeping her family life mostly private after she took a break from social media following 2019’s “Fresh Off the Boat” controversy.
At the time, Wu, who portrayed Jessica Huang on the show, posted several profanity-laced tweets about its sixth-season renewal.
Countless social media users interpreted her frustration as ungrateful and sent her hate messages and death threats. Wu shared that the backlash even included a private altercation with a fellow Asian actor who told her she had “become a blight on the Asian American community.”
In her 2022 memoir “Making a Scene,” Wu reveals that she survived an attempted suicide following the backlash. She also reveals that a “Fresh Off the Boat” producer controlled and sexually harassed her.
