Brenda Song joins Mindy Kaling’s Netflix basketball comedy series

The new cast: Song was named as part of the Kate Hudson-led cast alongside Scott MacArthur and Drew Tarver on Kaling’s new Netflix series, which she co-wrote with Elaine Ko. Kaling also serves as executive producer.

About the show: The untitled show follows Isla Gordon (Hudson) as she takes over as president of their family business, the illustrious Los Angeles Waves, after her brother is forced to resign due to a scandal.

The project, inspired by the front office of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers, received a 10-episode straight-to-series order in June 2021.

The show’s characters: Song plays Ali Lee, the Waves’ chief of staff described as a character born and raised on the south side of Chicago and who “knows where the bodies are buried.” She is also so tough that “even the biggest guy on the team is scared of her.”

Tarver plays Sandy Gordon, the hopelessly unathletic brother of Isla who serves as the Waves’ chief financial officer. He is described as someone who “thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room, and is often right.”

MacArthur plays Ness Gordon, the “emotionally sensitive” general manager of the Waves and a former professional basketball player who “burned out after one season in the pros.” He now yearns for “greatness in the front office to make up for his unremarkable career on the court, and to impress his siblings.”

Other projects: Song recently voiced Princess Akemi in Netflix’s animated series “Blue Eye Samurai.” She is also set to appear alongside Pamela Anderson, Dave Bautista and Jamie Lee Curtis in Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl.”
