Bowen Yang to Win the ‘Visibility Award’ From Human Rights Campaign

Comedian Bowen Yang is set to receive an award from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) for his contribution to the visibility of the LGBTQ community both on and off the screen.

The Brooklyn-based writer and actor, who became a regular cast member on “Saturday Night Live” last year, will be given the Visibility Award at the HRC’s 25th annual North Carolina Dinner on February 22.

The civil organization will be hosting the event at the Le Meridien Charlotte to raise funds for its efforts in advancing LGBTQ equality, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

“Through his hilarious representation on and off the screen, Bowen Yang is inspiring LGBTQ young people and many others to embrace their authentic selves,” HRC president Alphonso David said. “As one of SNL’s openly gay and the only Asian American cast member, Yang is boldly moving visibility forward.”

Prior to landing his role on SNL, Yang made appearances on television shows such as “Broad City” and “High Maintenance.”

The 29-year-old actor has always been open about his sexuality. Out Magazine, which named Yang as one of their top 100 entertainers earlier this year, praised him for “bringing the queer agenda to television.”

The son of Chinese immigrants, Yang studied chemistry at NYU and is currently based in Brooklyn.
