The world’s most expensive sushi, which costs over $2,000, can now be found in Japan, according to Guinness World Records (GWR).
Key details: On Tuesday, GWR posted on its website about the expensive dish, which can be found in Sushi Kirimon in Osaka. Anyone interested in trying out the restaurant’s “Kiwami Omakase” course can expect to shell out 350,000 yen (approximately $2,475).
The sushi is reportedly “made using traditional techniques and methods” and “carefully selected ingredients from all over Japan.”
What’s served: Diners receive 20 pieces of sushi: white tilefish and beluga caviar; shinko (baby gizzard shad); pacific bluefin tuna; bigfin reef squid; chum salmon; sei whale tail meat; murasaki uni (purple sea urchin); bafun uni (green sea urchin); steamed abalone; fatty tuna belly; medium-fat tuna belly; lean tuna back; marbled tuna belly; seared tuna belly; Japanese tiger prawn; button shrimp and beluga caviar; conger eel; sea eel and black truffle; hairy crab and beluga caviar; and a slice of futomaki containing hairy crab, conger eel, dried mullet roe, monkfish liver, purple sea urchin, cucumber, matsutake mushroom, shiitake mushroom, kanpyo (dried gourd shavings), oboro (crumbled shrimp paste) and egg.
For the finishing touch, the chef sprinkles gold leaf on the pricey sushi.
Previous record: Prior to Sushi Kirimon, Angelito Araneta Jr. sold the world’s most expensive sushi, according to GWR. The Filipino chef sold five pieces of nigiri wrapped in 24-karat gold leaf and garnished with diamonds at the steep price of 91,800 Philippine pesos (approximately $1,978).
