Weki Meki’s Choi Yoo-jung blossoms in debut solo ‘Sunflower’
Weki Meki’s Choi Yoo-jung has sprouted into a solo artist with her debut single album, “Sunflower.”
After six years as an idol across two different girl groups, Choi Yoo-jung is finally making a solo debut. In an interview with NME, the singer shared that the title for the single stems from her late grandfather, who drew her a sunflower and said it was her.
“Sunflower” is rooted in R&B and hip-hop and has a total of three songs: “Sunflower (P.E.L),” “Tip Tip Toes” and “OWL,” the first two of which Choi co-wrote. According to Choi, the “P.E.L” in the song’s title stands for “power, energy and love.”
Long before her solo album, Choi was known as an all-rounder for her talents in singing, dancing, rapping and acting. She went on to compete in the idol reality competition show “Produce 101” in 2016, coming in third and going on to debut in the iconic girl group, I.O.I. Some other notable talents from the 11-member act included CHUNG HA, Somi, Kim Se-jeong from Netflix’s K-drama “Business Proposal,” DIA’s Jung Chae-yeon and Lim Na-Young, to name a few.
Following I.O.I.’s disbandment after only a year, Choi joined the octet girl group Weki Meki alongside her fellow I.O.I. sister Do-yeon. Weki Meki’s last group comeback was last year with the EP “I AM ME.,” led by the title track “Siesta.”
