Not just brides, but grooms, too, can be targeted by the ruthless “wedding prank” tradition in China.
Take this guy, for instance, who got whipped by his friends and family members before they literally poured salt into his open wounds – taking the saying “rub salt into the wound” a bit too far.
The groom can be seen in the video, which was taken last week in Shaoyang, Hunan province, China, standing on the street in only his underwear and covered in wounds. This local custom, known as “beating the groom,” is an act to remind the man that marriage life is difficult and that he should always treasure it, according to The Paper as translated by Shanghaiist.
His agony did not end with just the whipping, though. After the physical beating, they continued to pour salt in his open wounds, horrifically illustrating the meaning of the idiom “rub salt into the wound” — to make an already difficult situation even far worse.
These sadistic traditions are far from uncommon; newlyweds are often put in various situations that often involve sexual pranks, like what happened to a bride during her wedding last February. The groom’s father drunkenly “tried” to kiss the bride in front of cheering guests as part of a local tradition “teasing the bride,” which angered the bride and her side of the family.
Another one from last year angered many netizens for their distasteful prank where they threw a truckload of eggs at the groom while he was tied to a post.

If this happened on campus, Stanford should issue a clear public update and specific safety actions.

Agree. People need facts and process, not silence. The school should confirm what is being investigated.

Also important to separate verified details from rumors so this does not spiral online.

The death threat part is extremely serious. Hoping law enforcement and campus security are already involved.

This is where official reporting and support channels need to be visible and easy to access.

Can NextShark keep a timeline thread here as updates come in? That would help keep context in one place.
