Two women showed ignorance on social media when they made fun of Asian nail salon workers’ language and accent in a video posted to a widely-followed Facebook page.
Looks Good Babe, a Facebook page with over 350,000 followers, posted a highly insensitive video yesterday featuring two women mocking the Chinese language with the title “This is brilliant.”
Apparently mimicking an Asian nail salon attendant, one of the women spoke in broken English initially before starting to speak gibberish.
As if there is anything funny about an immigrant earning a livelihood and speaking a second language, the women in the video giggled throughout the 1-minute clip.
In less than 24 hours, the video captioned “When she started speaking ‘Chinese,'” has amassed over 3 million views, 42,000 shares, and 8,000 reactions.
Netizens flooded the comment section with criticisms on the blatant racist jab against Asians.
“So… imagine this was a video of two Asian women doing a (stereotypical) imitation of how Black or Latina women talk and act… the same people laughing now would be up in arms. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Am I lying?” one commenter wrote.
“Switch up the roles and there would be a riot 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ I love how racism is okay when it’s convenient for the person at the time,” another reacted.
“Not being a butthurt on Facebook and I’m not offended but growing up as the only Asian girl in school in Logan WV it always bothered me so much when people would walk up to me and mock my language. They would literally say some jibberish and ask me “what did I say in Chinese” so I didn’t really find it funny,” one netizen pointed out.
“If Vietnamese people were mocking African Americans this response of comments would be a whole other story, if you don’t like how they speak and communicate go somewhere else then and stop being disrespectful,” a Facebook user wrote.
“This isn’t funny just saying, it’s disrespectful because those women who do your nails work hard and do the best work. Y’all are childish,” another commenter said.
However, there were those who defended the video, stating that the jokes were harmless.
“Everyone does accents. It’s cool. It’s funny as hell. Everyone does the typical Asian nail tech, the African, the ghetto baby momma or drug dealer, the whitest white guy who rocks on their tippy toes, and the Indian cab driver. 😂 it’s funny. Lighten up people it’s 2018,” one user wrote.
“Guess I’m racist because I found this hilarious. Lol but I can see why other people are upset,” another one added.
“I’m Asian I still laughed at this, if we can learn to accept to joke around stereotypes we know that are and aren’t true and laugh about it the world would be less butthurt because I trash talk on every race because I know when to joke around with it when I’m getting roasted by my diverse set of friends,” one commenter explained.
(The) point of the video wasn’t and isn’t to make fun of how they speak 🤣😂😂🤦🏽‍♀️ Y’all be ready to turn everything into something it’s not. You feel that she was and yes it’s not right but her whole ideal wasn’t to make fun of those cultures. You’ll have to be open-minded to understand the reason behind this video,” pointed another.
“While I appreciate some comments that it is not nice to be satirical, you really do not understand the joke unless you have had your nails done and have experienced some, usually all, of the Asian manicurists rudely talking, sneering and giggling in their own language to one another while they are doing your nails as though you are invisible. Some do not even say ‘hello’. Being black has absolutely nothing to do with it. It is an attack on rude behavior by manicurists, nothing to do with their race,” a netizen said.
