Jiulong Temple in Mianzhu, Sichuan Province, China, was ravaged by a fire on December 10, destroying what was believed to be Asia’s tallest wooden pagoda.
According to Yahoo News, the 15 story wooden structure went up in flames on Sunday. No casualties were reported.
Two halls were also destroyed in the blaze. “The fire started at the Great Buddha Hall and spread to the Jade Emperor Hall. Then the wind was blowing and the pagoda was also on fire,” witness Yu Guixiang said.
The site had been undergoing renovations since 2008. The original structure was over 400 years old.
It took firefighters four hours to put out the flames. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
