Against a seemingly bottomless pit of negative reviews, Mindy Kaling’s “Scooby-Doo” spin-off “Velma” will reportedly ascend to a second season after all.
As of press time, the HBO Max adult animated series has an abysmal 7% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, it has a 1.4-star rating on IMDb, up from an even worse 1.3-star rating that cemented it as the site’s worst-rated animated show.
HBO Max, which canceled more than 20 programs with parent HBO in 2022, has yet to officially announce a renewal.
The news about the show’s Season 2 development instead comes from Deadline, which spoke to Warner Bros. TV Chairman and CEO Channing Dungey about their range of comedy projects, including “Velma,” which ended up becoming HBO Max’s strongest animated series debut
Countless “Velma” critics have declared that the series is poorly written. However, these overwhelmingly negative reviews may be the reason the show is seeing a second installment, since more and more viewers are apparently checking it out for themselves.
Kaling, who voices Velma and is also one of the show’s executive producers, has appeared unbothered since critics began ripping her idea apart after it was first announced.
“Hopefully, you noticed my Velma is South Asian. If people freak out about that, I don’t care. Nobody ever complained about a talking dog solving mysteries so I don’t think they’ll be upset over a brown Velma,” she told audience members at a Warner Bros. presentation last May:
So far, there is no official word on how far development has progressed for Season 2. A “source close to production” has confirmed with IGN that the new season is already underway.
