Trump revokes Harris’ Secret Service protection ahead of her nationwide book tour

Former Vice President Kamala Harris loses her Secret Service protection today after President Donald Trump ended its extended coverage early.
Trump issued an executive memo Thursday directing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to end Harris’ detail effective today. The protection, first reported by CNN, had been set to continue through July 2026 under an order from former President Joe Biden, but such extensions are unusual for former vice presidents. Mike Pence received only the standard six-month coverage after leaving office.
Harris faced heightened security risks as the nation’s first Asian and Black woman vice president, particularly during her presidential campaign. But a White House official told AP News that recent threat intelligence found no credible evidence against her, leading the administration to conclude her protection. The coverage she is losing includes more than bodyguards, however; it also encompasses ongoing analysis of threat intelligence from emails, texts and social media platforms. Private security of comparable scope would cost millions annually.
Harris, who ruled out running for California governor, will begin a 15-city international tour on Sept. 24 for her memoir “107 Days,” titled based on the length of her presidential campaign. Law enforcement sources say California will step in with Highway Patrol protection, according to the Los Angeles Times.
