Tony Leung fans were shocked to see photos of the veteran Hong Kong actor with “Squid Game” director Hwang Dong-hyuk, instantly sparking Season 2 casting rumors.
On Sunday, actor Carina Lau shared the first set of photos of her husband talking to Hwang
on her Instagram.
“Ready for Squid Game? @squidgamenetflix,” she wrote in her first post’s caption.
In the black-and-white images, Leung and Hwang
sit across from each other and appear engaged in conversation. Earlier this month, the “Shang-Chi” actor
was in South Korea with Lau for the 27th Busan International Film Festival, where he was named Asian Filmmaker of the Year
Later that day, Lau posted more photos of her husband and Hwang. “Let’s play Squid game! #squidgame,” she wrote in her second post’s caption.
Although the recent posts came as a surprise to many netizens, Leung has previously expressed his desire
to act in K-dramas.
“If there are roles for which I can overcome the language barrier, I would like to star in Korean drama,” he said last week. “If there is a role that does not require me to speak like the characters in that film, maybe I can also be in Korean dramas.”
Several of Leung’s fans commented on Lau’s first post, which has already garnered 11,400 likes, to share their excitement.
“Is this for real?? He will be in squid game?? Omg i just cant wait for 2nd second season,” one Instagram user wrote.
“Please please please be on Squid game… the both of you and be villains. This will be epic!” another user commented.
The official release date for Season 2 of Netflix’s hit series “Squid Game
” has yet to be announced, but it is expected to premiere sometime in 2024. Filming will reportedly start in 2023 with a new game mechanism
called “Cheol-su.” Fan favorites such as Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun and Gong Yoo are expected to return.
