After making the perilous escape from North Korea in the 2019 hit “Crash Landing on You,” Korean actress Son Ye-jin is returning to Netflix in the new K-drama “Thirty-Nine.”
Netflix recently released the official trailer for the show, which follows the lives of three 39-year-old best friends: Cha Mi-jo, who is played by Son, along with Jeong Chan-young (Jeon Mi-do) and Jang Joo-hee (Kim Ji-hyun).

The three characters have been inseparable since meeting in high school, sticking by each other through the highs and lows of life even as they’ve gone on to pursue their own dreams. But one day, their lives are flipped when one of them is diagnosed with a terminal illness. The trailer shows the devastating moment they learn of the news before grappling with the new reality of having to say goodbye to their lifelong friend.
Along with “Crash Landing on You,” Son is known for her roles in a number of other films and dramas including “A Moment to Remember,” “April Snow” and “Something in the Rain.” Jeon Mi-do is widely known for playing one of the lead characters in the popular “Hospital Playlist” series, while Kim Ji-hyun has had supporting roles in “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes” and “Justice.” Kim also appeared in the 2020 Netflix hit romantic K-drama “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.”
The 12-episode drama series is helmed by rookie director Kim Sang-ho (“Ping Pong Ball”) and written by Yu Young-a (“Encounter”).
Two episodes will be released every week, on Saturdays and Sundays, beginning Feb. 16.
