An American couple that sparked outrage in Thailand have both been arrested by immigration police for taking indecent pictures with their butts exposed at several sacred locations in the country.
The couple, identified only as Joseph and Travis, both 38, were caught by police at the Don Mueang International Airport on November 28 at 8 p.m., with warrants charging them for getting naked in public — taking pictures with their naked bottoms — while they were at Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), a Buddhist temple in Bangkok.
Deputy spokesman of immigration police, Pol Col Choengron Rimpadee, said the two Americans were immediately brought to the Bangkok Yai police station where they are currently being held before facing the court, Bangkok Post reported.
Joseph and Travis violated criminal law, and they are now facing a fine of up to 5,000 baht ($153.50).
Many netizens in Thailand were quite furious when the pair’s photos surfaced online earlier this week, showing their naked butts on several sacred places throughout the country. Some netizens wrote:
“We’re Thai people. We can’t take this ugly shit. If you want to do whatever you want, go home.”
“They’re like animals with zero knowledge.”
“They’re from a civilized country, but they are the most vile.”
“Trying so hard to look cool but actually ending up looking like a pervert with dirty filthy asses, disrespecting the glory of monuments. I wish some other sperm would’ve won.”
Others also wanted the couple to be prohibited from entering the country ever again, similar to what happened to German con artist Benjamin Holst.
Together, Joseph and Travis, who both have their own Instagram accounts, go by the handle of @traveling_butts on the social media platform; however, it appears that their joint Instagram account has been deactivated due to the incident.
