‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ was banned from Malaysian theaters due to LGBTQ content, reveals official

  • Malaysia has banned “Thor: Love and Thunder” from local theaters due to its LGBTQ content.
  • The Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Zahidi Zainul Abidin said on Wednesday that the government and its religious department, the Islamic Affairs Department (JAKIM), would continue to double down on the spread of LGBTQ culture.
  • In “Thor,” both Valkyrie and Korg caused a stir after Valkyrie is shown ruling Asgard as its openly gay king while Korg finds love with another member of his all-male species.
  • On the same day that Zahidi made these comments, Human Rights Watch and transgender rights group Justice for Sisters published a report that denounced the government’s criminalization of same-sex conduct and push for conversion therapy.

Malaysia has banned Marvel’s latest movie “Thor: Love and Thunder” from releasing in theaters as the government moves to bolster censorship of LGBTQ content.

Malaysia’s Film Censorship Board (LPF) already banned “Lightyear” from premiering in local theaters earlier this year after requests for cuts to be made to the film were denied by Disney. The “Toy Story” spin-off, which featured Buzz’s friend Alisha Hawthorne in a same-sex marraige, was banned in at least 16 Muslim-majority countries.

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ set to lose millions in potential revenue as China release prospects dim

  • Marvel Studios’ newest film “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which launched globally last week, has yet to get a release date in China.
  • In 2017, “Thor: Ragnarok” earned $112 million in China, which is now the second-largest film market in the world, second only to the U.S.
  • Getting approval for “Thor 4” is deemed unlikely by observers as Disney has recently maintained a stance to not remove gay references and content in its films just to appease government censors in international markets.
  • “Thor 4” could now be the seventh consecutive Marvel superhero movie to be blocked in China, joining “Black Widow,” “Eternals,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

Nearly a week after its successful global release, Marvel Studios’ newest film “Thor: Love and Thunder” has yet to get a release date in China.

The fourth installment of the Thor franchise and the latest in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is at risk of being denied approval by Chinese film regulators purportedly due to its LGBTQ content.
