Studio Ghibli has finally unveiled an “introduction” to Hayao Miyazaki’s purported final cinematic project, “The Boy and the Heron.”
Teaser for a teaser: While the 30-second clip doesn’t offer any glimpses of the actual film, it shares an intriguing synopsis: “A young boy named Mahito yearning for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead, where death finds its end, and life embarks on a new beginning.”
The short clip, which hints at the whimsical storytelling that Miyazaki is renowned for, also reveals that a teaser for the film is to arrive on Wednesday.
Lack of publicity: Alternatively titled “How Do You Live?,” the highly anticipated film has been shrouded in secrecy since it was first announced in 2017. With Studio Ghibli opting to limit its marketing, fans were left in the dark regarding its plot prior to its release in Japan in July.
Last month, 14 film stills featuring different characters and colorful scenes were notably released.
Local hit: Despite the lack of publicity, “The Boy and the Heron” has grossed an astounding 7.7 billion Japanese yen (approximately $52.1 million) in Japan as of Monday, solidifying its status as one of Studio Ghibli’s most triumphant ventures to date. North American audiences are now eagerly awaiting its arrival later this year.
