Legendary director Hayao Miyazaki’s latest Studio Ghibli film will premiere in cinemas across Japan in 2023.
The project was first announced in 2017.
Tentatively titled ‘How Do You Live?” in English, the movie is reportedly inspired by Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 children’s novel of the same name. Miyazaki, 81, has previously shared that this was his favorite childhood book.
In a recent tweet, the official account of Studio Ghibli North America confirmed the upcoming film.

Miyazaki started working on “How Do You Live?” back in 2016.
Although the project is inspired by Genzaburo’s novel, it will feature a different plot. Instead of taking place in prewar Japan, it will reportedly be a “big, fantastical story,” with Miyazaki having written its screenplay.
The film, which uses hand-drawn animation, took approximately six years to make, with just 12 minutes of animation produced every year.
“How Do You Live?” will be screened in Japan on July 14, 2023. A U.S. release date has yet to be announced.
